Education Day

Education Day was sponsored by the Santa Cruz Office of Education and Graniterock. County Superintendent of Schools, Michael Watkins spoke on the topic of "The Landscape of Educational Changes for Schools in California". Then the group vanpooled to San Lorenzo Valley High School where they were welcomed by San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District (SLVUSD) Superintendent Dr. Laurie Bruton, Principal Karen Van Putten, and SLVUSD Trustee and LSCC board member George Wylie. We were given a fascinating tour of the school's new Aquaponics Greenhouse. This innovative program was installed by SchoolGrown and has proven to be a sustainable and cross-disciplinary educational program for the school and is a model for others across the country.

The class was welcomed to Harbor High School by Principal Dick Davis and Counselor Sherry Williams, then selected Career Technical Education tours from 4 breakout sessions - Biotechnology, Construction Technology, Health Careers, and Video Production.

A delicous lunch was prepared and served by the Regional Occupational program students currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program located at the Front Street Kitchen run by ROP Instructor Andrea Mollenauer. Afterwards a Q and A Panel with Michael Watkins, County Superintendent of Schools; Kris Munro, Superintendent, Santa Cruz City School District; Dorma Baker, Superintentent – Pajaro Valley Unified School District; Penny Weaver, Superintendent, Scotts Valley School District; Henry Castaniada, Superintendent Soquel School District.

The final portion of the Education Day program was held at the UCSC Arboretum with informative discussions on Coping with the Challenges Facing Public Higher Education Today by UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal, and Community College Challenges by Cabrillo College President Dr. Laurel Jones.

The day wrapped with a tour of the beautiful UCSC Arboretum.
