Housing and Economics Day
What a great day of learning about our community’s housing and economic issues. The day began with Fred Keeley (former Assembly member and County Treasurer) providing a broad overview of our local economy. This was followed with a presentation by County Supervisor, Ryan Coonerty on the “new economy” and its impact on the more traditional ways of conducting business. The morning ended with a panel discussion on the pros and cons of Measure M – The Santa Cruz City Rent Control and Tenant Protection Act. After lunch, Barbara Mason (County Economic Development Coordinator) followed up with an overview of countywide housing issues. The day concluded with a planning exercise (charrette) by Architect Matthew Thompson which brought home some of the difficulties of developing a vibrant community with parking and other constraints.
