Business and Tourism Day
Class 34’s Business & Tourism day went very well. The weather cooperated and overall experience exceeded expectations. The day began with a welcome from the Day Sponsor, the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union, and the day’s host, the Santa Cruz Seaside Company. Next the class delved into some of the community’s transportation opportunities and challenges. Teresa Thomae, Director of the Small Business Development Center, not only talked to the class about small business, but she brought Annie Pautsch in as a guest speaker to tell the class about her experience in starting up her company – Brew Cruz.
The class then had the opportunity to spend the rest of the morning on a field trip to various businesses, Bookshop Santa Cruz, NextSpace, 11th Hour Coffee, Abbott Square. After the lunch hosted by the Beach Boardwalk, Maggie Ivy, CEO of Visit Santa Cruz, discuss the impact of tourism on our community. The final presentation was by Ted Whiting III, Vice President Legacy Affairs, who intertwined the history and leadership behind the Beach Boardwalk. The day ended with a wonderful behind-the-scenes tour of the Beach Boardwalk by Sondra Woods, Director of Advertising. This made for a fitting end to a very good day.
