Even the threat of rain could not dampen the spirit of Class 34 on their Education Day. The day began at the County Office of Education (COE) with an opportunity for the class to meet the new County Superintendent of Schools – Dr. Faris Sabbah. Dr. Sabbah was engaging and spent considerable time answering questions. Next, the class hopped on a Santa Cruz METRO bus for school tours to Sequoia High School, Tierra Pacific Charter School, and Branciforte Middle School.
When the class returned to the COE they were served a wonderful lunch by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program supervised by Chef Andrea Mollenaur. Superintendent Sabbah returned to answer more questions from the class and to discuss the current state of education in our community.
The day concluded with an opportunity for the class hear from Chancellor Blumenthal at the UCSC Arboretum. The Chancellor provided an oversight of many of the great things occurring at the University along with some of the issues the campus is currently facing. This was followed by a presentation from Kristin Fabos, Dir., Marketing and Communications. Kristin provided an overview of the many programs provided at Cabrillo and engaged the class with a discussion on funding. Some of the brave class members remained for an optional tour provided by Arboretum volunteers.
