Local Government Day

Class members learned about how local city and county government agencies are structured, how they align with other local, state and federal jurisdictions, and how operations are funded. Current challenges and future issues such as funding, homelessness, water resources, fire threat, and advocacy were a common thread. The looming issues of fire threat and water availability will be discussed by the former Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency.

Special thanks to guest speakers covering these topics:

“The Basics of City Government” - Tina Friend, City Manager, Scotts Valley

“Leading Change and Addressing the County’s Challenges” - Carlos Palacios, Santa Cruz County Chief Administrative Officer

“The Politics of Fire and Water” - John Laird, Former Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency

“Working in Different Levels of Government,” Bruce McPherson, County Supervisor, 5th District

“13 Tips for Successful Advocacy,” Joe Simitian, Santa Clara Board of Supervisors, 5th District 4:15 Adjournment

Thank you to warm welcomes from Randy Johnson, Mayor City of Scotts Valley and Carrie Birkhofer, President and CEO of our day sponsor Bay Federal Credit Union. Carrie was also a member of Class 10! And to Susan Nemitz Scotts, Director of Santa Cruz Public Libraries for her tour of the Scotts Valley Library.

Thank you also to Breakfast Sponsor Cyas Tech, Phil Neuman, Class 34 and to Lunch Sponsor Scotts Valley Chamber.
