Class 37’s Local Government Day began at the Scotts Valley City Council Chamber. The class was greeted with a wonderful breakfast sponsored by nearby business; Cyber Ascend Technologies. Networking among class members continued until Mayor Randy Johnson welcomed the class as he shared some insights about Scotts Valley. This was followed by remarks from the Day Sponsor - Bay Federal Credit Union. President and CEO Carrie Birkhofer. Carrie spoke about Bay Federal's commitment to the community and to Leadership Santa Cruz County.
The first presenter was class member Mali LaGoe, Scotts Valley's City Manager . Mali gave the class a very clear breakdown of how local government works at the city level. Carlos Palacios, County Administrative Officer, followed this with a discussion on issues facing Santa Cruz County and compared some to the differences between city and county government. Finally, Supervisor Bruce McPherson shared insights on how it is possible to advocate for positive change as a citizen working with local government.
Then the class was off to Bruno’s Bar and Grill for a wonderful lunch sponsored by the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce. After a brief presentation by Eric Howard, Interim Director of Santa Cruz Public Libraries, the class heard from Senator John Laird who talked about the complexities in representing a large senatorial district. The day concluded with an insightful presentation on what it is like running for, and working on the Santa Cruz City Council by former council member, Richelle Noroyan.
All in all, Class 37 came away from this day with a much better understanding on how local government works in Santa Cruz County.
